Back in mid-January, our new #1 receiver had a bold claim regarding his lowly Chicago Bears team.
“I guarantee you we’ll win the Super Bowl next year,” Jeffery said after Sunday’s 38-10 loss to the Vikings, via ESPN.com. “We had a lot of injuries. I don’t think a team in the league had as much injuries as us.”
Alshon, buddy, I hope you didn’t mean this. The Bears were more than just a few injuries away from turning 3-13 into a Super Bowl caliber team. And does this also mean that Alshon thought Jay Cutler was good enough to win a Super Bowl? Does that completely skew his evaluations of quarterbacks? IS CARSON WENTZ NOT GOING TO BE A FUTURE MVP, ALSHON?
Now I’m flustered.
I’m all for athletes making claims, but Alshon sounds like LaVar Ball here.
But back to why you clicked on this story, does that Super Bowl guarantee transfer over to the Eagles?
Let’s dig in.
We as Eagles fans do not like guarantee’s because guarantee’s end in heartbreak for us. Besides Jimmy Rollins saying that the Phillies are the team to beat, guarantee’s don’t work out well here– ESPECIALLY for the Eagles. Is Alshon’s comment about Wentz being MVP one day going to be mocked in this town like Vince Young’s dream team prediction? I hope not.
But here’s why there’s hope.
I don’t think the Super Bowl guarantee transfers over to the Eagles and here’s why:
First, let’s look at the situation Alshon was in. It was week 17, he was coming off being suspended for 4 games for PED’s and the Bears were awful. He was probably emotional because Matt Barkley had underthrown him 3 times in the game. Alshon seems like a guy that is really prideful and wears his emotion on his sleeve and coming off of the field in a beatdown, you want to portray confidence. I believe that Alshon was just portraying confidence in his team and he didn’t want them looking like losers. Sure, Alshon looked insane BUT what a teammate. Always has his guys backs.
Second, let’s look at the wording here.
He said WE and then talked about THAT teams injuries. He wasn’t talking about we and the injuries to Bennie Logan, Ron Brooks, Ryan Mathews and members of the offensive line. He was talking about the injuries on his football team.
As the Czar of the Guarantee, you can breathe easy Philadelphia. Alshon Jeffery’s guarantee of a Super Bowl victory in this upcoming season does not translate over to the Eagles.
However, naming Wentz a future MVP does.
But hey, a Super Bowl would be nice, Mr. Jeffery.
