Drink if you’ve read about the impending Nelson Agholor breakout that is totally going to happen!
I feel like every article this week has mentioned that we could be getting some Brandon Graham 2.0 with Nelson Agholor this season and I don’t know man, I think that’s a pretty big take away from a 2 hour practice against air. While I am very much rooting for this to happen, I am also firmly in the let’s wait and see mode with him. But really, we should be rooting for Nelson. He’s a good kid and a notoriously hard worker that would be coming over a lot to make it in this city. Usually guys like this would have to go to a new city to get a fresh start, but Agholor is sort of getting that here.
The Eagles are putting about as little pressure on Agholor as possible heading into his third season. They brought in Alshon to be the go-to receiver, they brought in Torrey Smith to take the top off the defense, something that Agholor isn’t best suited as, and Jordan Matthews can now settle into the slot. Agholor just needs to show us SOMETHING this year and it’s a win.
But I keep coming back to the Agholor breakout that everyone’s talking about and really, the Eagles need it to happen.
I want Agholor to be the slot receiver of the future for this team.
A year from now, the Eagles are going to be in a tricky spot with Jordan Matthews. Maybe this year he proves to be a really reliable slot receiver and he makes catches in big moments. Or, he’s the same inconsistent Jordan Matthews that we’ve seen over the last couple of seasons. He’s going to put up stats, but when you need him the most he lets you down. The Eagles would be put in a pickle. With no other real options for the slot, Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson seem best for the outside, do they shell $40-50 million at Matthews even though you know what you’re going to get?
It would really help is Agholor shows he can be reliable in the slot this season.
That would allow you to not overpay for Matthews and allocate those resources elsewhere. I’ve seen many people suggest that Agholor is probably best suited in the slot going forward anyway and this makes a ton of sense. Even though he’s struggled immensely in his first two seasons, Agholor has always shown the ability to make plays with the ball in his hands (if he could catch it first). Playing in the slot would give him the best chance to do this going forward.
So yes, it’s important to not read into much of what is going on at OTA’s but it would be really sweet if he broke out in 2017 both for him and for the future of the Eagles slot receiver position.
