I unfortunately was in attendance for the Eagles/R-Words game yesterday and had to look around a pillar for most of the afternoon just to see what was going on.
Who the hell designs a stadium where multiple sections are affected by multiple pillars all around the field. Oh, and they had this sign, which was cute.
“Quick! Let’s inform our fans that they should be loud for this football game.”
I walked out of that stadium just annoyed. Annoyed by R-Word fans trying to talk smack. Annoyed about that being our 4th straight loss to the R-Words. Annoyed that we made Matt Jones, who sucks, look like O.J Simpson reincarnated. Annoyed that we lost to this guy:
But more then all of that, annoyed because that felt like a Chip Kelly era loss.
What do I mean by that?
Well, similar to the Chip Kelly era, the only reason the Eagles were in that game was because of a kick return and pick 6. The offense wasn’t moving the ball and Wentz was being eaten alive by Ryan Kerrigan. The defense was on the field for over 30 minutes and were getting absolutely man-handled. They looked unprepared. The final nail-in-the-coffin was that if you take away the kick return and the pick 6, this game wasn’t even close.
The final score was close, sure, but that was because of two sort of freak plays. Just like early in the 2014 season, when we saw the Eagles’ obvious flaws but didn’t comment on them because the team was 3-0. Deep down, we all knew they were winning games because of punt/kick returns and int’s. That’s what yesterday felt like and it’s something I didn’t think we would see from this Eagles team.
The Eagles now have obvious flaws.
Corner is a problem. Jalen Mills just isn’t fast enough to stay with receivers in the NFL and can you quit it with the finger wag? The line is all of a sudden a problem. Big V will start this week, and I would start him, but if it turns into a disaster, Pederson has to be ready to adjust/get other lineman ready to go. Receivers are still a problem. Wentz was getting some more time in the second half but it didn’t matter because guys couldn’t get any separation. Penalties are a problem. The officials were horrible yesterday but at sometime it’s got to be the Indian and not the arrow. The Eagles are on pace for their most penalties in team history. It also didn’t help that the refs “missed” multiple holding calls and a couple blocks in the back, but I digress. Finally, coaching is getting more and more shaky. Pederson didn’t seem prepared for certain situations yesterday. He should have had a better plan if Big V struggled. It didn’t end up mattering, but taking a timeout just to figure out if you want to punt or not is unjustifiable. If you punt the ball, you now only have two timeouts for your defense to get stops with 1:30 left on the game clock. That’s stuff that can’t happen. And the penalties point directly to coaching. Anyone can be a great coach when you’re beating teams by double digits, but the truly great ones are prepared if their team goes down.
On the bright side, Wentz was the only reason the Eagles even had a chance to win that game. He made some big time throws and kept some plays alive that would have been killed in the past with our QB’s.
Losses are somewhat easier now that we have quarterback, right?
